Yamato Japanese Steakhouse, 7101 NW Expway- January 22, 2011

Yamato

The Yamato Japanese Steakhouse was a novel choice for the 5-Star Dinner Club. We also had a guest reviewer, an entertaining Texas attorney, who was experienced in Japanese cuisine. He informed us that Yamato was the name of a Japanese battleship (among the largest) sunk by the Americans in World War II. Although not required, we did have reservations and had only a short wait before our table was ready. A Japanese Steakhouse is NOT the place to go for quiet conversation. Too many knives chopping on the grills and seating not conducive to small talk. Patrons are seated on both short ends and the long end of a grill as pictured above. You could actually reach out and touch the grill if you were so inclined. The chef stands on the other side of the grill and while grilling your order manages to juggle dangerous-looking knives and cannisters of fire. It was entertaining. You have a choice of entrees (steak, chicken, combinations, etc.), but sides are all the same. A clear soup with onions and mushrooms (good flavor), shrimp, green salad, fried or steamed rice, onions and zucchini, and grilled sprouts. Ginger and hot mustard sauces are served as well as green tea. Although it costs extra, the fried rice is much better than the unflavored steamed rice. Most of the food was good, and it was an interesting experience. The Yamato rated 3 stars out of 5.
